OCHO RIOS - Play Play Play

Discover The Montego Bay Resort - Your Perfect Place to stay in Jamaica

Ocho Rios is a completely different proposition.

You don't make the trip primarily to see another beach.

You go to DO something.

Waterfalls. Rainforest. Rivers. Zip lines. Rafting. Bobsleds. Swimming holes.

This is the more adventurous side of Jamaica.

How far is Ocho Rios?

It's approximately 101 km / 63 miles by road from Montego Bay.

Figure roughly 1 hour 40 minutes each way by car, although traffic can extend that. Current transportation estimates put a private taxi around US$140–$170 one way, while scheduled bus options can be dramatically cheaper.

For resort guests, I'd recommend arranging a reputable private driver or organized excursion rather than trying to save a few dollars figuring out local transportation.

The reason to go: Dunn's River Falls

Duns River Felh is one of Jamaica's signature natural attractions.

The waterfall descends in terraces toward the Caribbean, and visitors can actually climb the falls, stopping in natural pools along the way. There's also beach access and other activities.

It's touristy.

It's famous.

And it's famous for a reason.

If you've never done it, do it once.

Bring water shoes.

Want more adventure? Mystic Mountain.

Nearby Mystic Mountain gives you a completely different experience.

A chairlift takes you hundreds of feet above the rainforest with views over Ocho Rios and the Caribbean.

Then things get considerably less peaceful.

There's a Jamaican-inspired bobsled ride, zip lines, a high-speed RaggaMuffin ride, climbing activities, water slide and an infinity pool overlooking the coast.

Families can easily turn this into most of a day.

And then there's the Blue Hole

If Dunn's River feels a little too organized for you, the Ocho Rios area also has Blue Hole/Island Gully Falls—turquoise swimming holes, waterfalls and a more nature/adventure-oriented experience.

Jamaica's tourism information also highlights the White River for bamboo rafting and tubing, plus Konoko Falls and other waterfalls around Ocho Rios.

That's what makes Ocho Rios different:

You're surrounded by things to do.

Is Ocho Rios safe?

I'd give exactly the same practical advice as Negril.

Ocho Rios is one of Jamaica's established tourism centers. Stick with recognized attractions and tourism areas, use reputable transportation and excursion operators, and follow current travel guidance.

The major attractions are highly developed visitor operations. For example, Dunn's River provides organized facilities, parking and lockers.

SO WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Choose NEGRIL if...

You want white sand, turquoise water, reggae, beach bars and an unforgettable sunset.

Best day: Seven Mile Beach → late lunch/drinks → Rick's Café at sunset.

Choose OCHO RIOS if...

You want waterfalls, rainforest, adventure and something you'll be talking about when you get home.

Best day: Dunn's River Falls → Mystic Mountain or Blue Hole → dinner → Montego Bay.

Or choose neither.

There's nothing wrong with looking at all those options and deciding:

“You know what? I have a beach, a pool and someone bringing me a drink right here.”

That's vacation too.

YOUR JAMAICA. YOUR WAY.

Negril for the sunset.
Ocho Rios for the adventure.
Montego Bay for home.
